Scottish curriculum

Fleet Tutors provides qualified tutors for the tuition of the Scottish education system.  Our tutors can cover all levels from Primary 1 (P1) to Secondary 6 (S6) and then onto university.  Scotland’s qualification framework is different from the rest of the UK.  The main differences are that students study for 7 years at primary level and then 4 at secondary.  At S5 and S6 students study for the Scottish Certificate of Education; this is widely recognized as the equivalent to GCE A-levels.

Below is a basic outline of the different levels and stages:

Level                          Stage

Primary                     Early = pre-school years and P1
P1: age 5
P2: age 6                   Primary = P2-P4
P3: age 7
P4: age 8
P5: age 9                   Second = P5-P7
P6: age 10
P7: age 11

S1: age 12                 Third and fourth = S1-S3
S2: age 13
S3: age 14
S4: age 15                 Senior = S4-S6
S5: age 16
S6: age 17

S4 = Standard grades, taken at age 15-16 (equivalent to GCSE’s)
S5 – Higher grades (equivalent to AS levels)
S6 – Advanced higher grades (equivalent to A2 levels)

Our tutors can cover all areas of the Scottish curriculum.  The 8 core areas are:

Expressive arts
Health and wellbeing
Languages / English
Religious and moral education
Social studies

The current Scottish curriculum includes assessments throughout the year paying particular attention before a student moves from one level to the next.  The Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) set most assessments in relation to the Scottish curriculum.  In August 2010 the Curriculum for Excellence was put in place and a review of the assessment methods is underway.  Currently the main qualifications are:

Advanced Highers Under
Highers review
Intermediate 1 Under review and
Intermediate 2 will soon be replaced
Standard Grade Credit with National 4
Standard Grade General and
Standard Grade Foundation National 5
